W9SBU is a web site about my activities as an amateur radio operator (HAM). HAM radio is a two-way radio similar to a CB radio, however, a low end mobile ham radio is about 10 times more powerful. Because of the high power, a FCC (Federal Communications Commission) license is required to legally operate a ham radio. To obtain a ham license, an individual has to pass a technical certification test required by the FCC. With such power, ham radios can communicate at much farther distances. Amateur radio is a hobby for some and a public service for others. I focus on public service as a storm spotter and emergency communications operator.
